都蘭糖廠˙咖啡屋˙Sugarfactory Caf'e Shop

In Dulan, I think the most obvious landmark (except 7-11) is the tall smokestack/chimney of XinDong sugar factory. ( 22°52’20.3”N 121°13’34.8”E) (Usually I call it Dulan sugar factory or just Tang-Chang)

It’s an important part of common memory for the local people when the factory worked prosperously during 60’ ~90’. But now, it has new looking and function. Maybe because it’s a private factory, the abandon spaces transformed into artist’s studios and commercial spaces easier and automatically than other forgotten spaces in Taiwan.

The most important part of the sugar factory is the coffee shop, which was the office of factory before. It’s a place with special atmosphere. It looks old and tumble-down to some people. My friend told me when he came here first time several years ago, he looked at this building and wondered: Will it collapse? Until now, the owner of the coffee shop changed and changed. We have some new stuff like tables and doors, but there is still no neon light/signboard outside, just some warm light you can see from the window at night.
In daytime, it’s a quiet and peaceful place, you can just relax with a cup of latte and newspaper. Usually the doggies lie somewhere lazily, and watch out for the cat, he is a wild kitty with angel’s face. (I do like him!)

In the night, the coffee shop will become a bar with music. Sometimes we just gather for fun, there is always someone singing, playing guitar or drum. Especially every Saturday night, there is live band performances, just pay $150NT for the ticket with one drink, you can enjoy the music all the night.
Sometimes we describe the coffee shop as “everybody’s living room”. People come here having a cup of latte before working in the morning. People come here to meet friends and have a gossip. People come here having a drink after dinner. People come here to get new friends, to fall in love, to get drunk, to fight to each other, to play their music, to discuss any topic from environment to political issues. There is an article named “the most distance coffee shop”(最遙遠的咖啡館) written by Mr. Su(舒國治). For him, the sugar factory coffee is “Alice’s kitchen”.
